Nokomis

Fifteen miles south of Sarasota and a little to the north of Venice is the tiny gulf coast town called Nokomis. It offers mainland bay and canal front properties where you could be neighbors with the friendly locals. Many Casey Key properties have Nokomis addresses, adding to its population of almost 4,000. While it’s a relatively small and quiet community, it has local shops, groceries and banks, and other all important services and amenities an area should have.

The costs of houses in Nokomis range from $139,000 to about $1.5 million for a bayfront home with a dock area and spacious view of the coastal waters. Condominium prices start at a hundred grand and already include comfortable living spaces as well as access to the beach fronts. Most of the canal front homes could be found at Shackett Creek, Fox Creek and Salt Creek, while the open bays are at Roberts, Lyons, Blackburn and Dona.

Apart from the basic but flashy picnic areas, volleyball courts and restrooms, Nokomis Beach also has a boat ramp. These make the twenty – acre area a relaxing destination for both permanent residents and visitors. Being the oldest public beach come as an additional pull for people as well.

For its history, Nokomis came to being when Jessie and Rebecca Knight’s family built a home in the area in 1868. Along with their eight children, over 300 cows and modest home items, they established a thatched roof church which was also a school building. Today, the historical church still stands and is known as Knight’s Chapel.

Everyone, regardless of life’s stature, have something interesting to do or pursue in Nokomis. Even if it’s removed from the hustles of city life, it has all the modern comforts visitors and new residents are used to. In addition, there are numerous cultural activities, options for shopping and various dining spots in Sarasota.
